Starling

September 9: As the Crow Flies – A 30 day drawing project. September 2015

Making this drawing reminded me of my  journey to high school in the 1970’s.  I had to travel across Manchester and change buses at Piccadilly or Albert Square. Walking up Market Street during the winter months the window ledges, eves and drainpipes of buildings and stores were alive with the twitterings of thousands of starlings, and if you passed through at dusk you could watch black clouds of them coming in to roost for the night.

Now though I think the bird is quite rare in Manchester, and for some time the large gatherings of teenage goths who hung around in Piccadilly were known as ‘Starlings’.
